Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I have to be of Hispanic/Latine descent to apply?

No! You do not have to be of Hispanic/Latine background to apply. The Latino SHARE program is open to all students, regardless of background, who demonstrate dedication and commitment to serving the Hispanic/Latine communities.

2. What does a typical week look like during this internship?

In line with SHARE’s emphasis on research experience, you will spend most of your time focused on working on your mentored research project, and you will have the opportunity to participate in other research experiences like shadowing. You will also participate in lectures, seminars, and workshops in a variety of topics, including HIV, substance use, health disparities, research ethics, quantitative and qualitative data analyses. There is also time for collaborating and networking with others.

3. Are international students eligible to apply?

No, International students are not eligible for this program.

4. Is there a stipend for the interns, or is this a volunteer position?

Yes, SHARE is a paid internship. The provided stipend is expected to help partially cover expenses during your stay in D.C.

5. Does SHARE provide housing for those who come from outside the DC Area?

We provide an additional stipend to help cover housing expenses partially. We partner with GW Summer Housing program (https://summerhousing.gwu.edu/) and prioritize those who live outside the DC metropolitan area.

6. Are there post-program activities?

Scholars are required to complete program evaluation activities. Mentors will continue supporting scholars in the development of conference abstracts and manuscripts for publication. Program directors will coach SHARE scholars upon completion of the program regarding career trajectory. There are multiple ways for alumni to remain actively connected with SHARE (e.g., MySHARE, Peer mentors, Alumni Advisory Board).

7. Are meals and transportation costs provided as part of the program?

SHARE will provide lunches on some days and transportation to special SHARE programming. Travel to and from Washington, D.C. is not provided. The provided stipend is expected to help partially cover the additional meal and transportation costs during your stay in D.C. With your housing, you have the option to purchase a meal plan and will have a community kitchen available. For more information, please visit: https://summerhousing.gwu.edu/

8. Are there scholarships or financial aid available for SHARE scholars to help with costs not covered during the program?

Unfortunately, we do not have scholarships available. However, please check with your home institution to inquire about scholarships, grants, or additional funding they may provide in order to participate in an internship experience.

In the past, we have worked with scholars to help with the additional cost of travel and housing by up fronting the cost and deducting the amount from the total stipend. If you have any questions or concerns regarding costs, please contact us at  [email protected]

9. Can I work full-time and participate in the SHARE summer program?

You are expected to fully dedicate your time to SHARE activities. The day-to-day schedule will require all SHARE Scholars to be present for lectures, meetings, workshops, and special events from 9am-5PM. In previous cohorts, SHARE scholars were able to have part-time virtual employments, but maintained their full commitment to SHARE. Working full-time while participating in SHARE is NOT recommended.

10. Are taxes withheld from the stipend received?

A stipend is intended to free up a student to undertake a role in connection with educational studies or research that would normally be uncompensated. The IRS does not require GW to withhold taxes on stipend payments. Students may be responsible for reporting these payments and remitting any tax due with their personal income tax return, e.g. Form 1040 and the corresponding state form. Please visit https://taxdepartment.gwu.edu/taxation-scholarships-fellowships-stipends or https://procurement.gwu.edu/stipend-resources for more information. If you have further questions, please contact a tax accounting professional.
